Baháʼís in the United Arab Emirates and all around the world celebrate numerous occasions and festivals. As numbered in the table below, there are nine days in which work is suspended and other days which are celebrated by Baháʼís but work is not suspended. The Baháʼí calendar - known as the Badì Calendar - is a solar calendar of 365 days in the year, 366 in a leap year, 19 months in a year, 19 days in a month and there are extra days known as the ’Ayyam-i-Há’ which are 4 days in the year, or 5 days in a leap year.
The year begins with the spring equinox, the first day of the Baháʼí calendar is the 21st of March. The excess 4 or 5 days known as ‘Ayyam-i-Há’ occur before the month of fasting. The beginning of the day in the Baháʼí calendar is at sunset and it ends at sunset of the next day.
The nine Holy days that commemorated or celebrated every year are days that are specified in the Baháʼí Writings, regarded as sacred and Divine, laws and teachings that are applicable in this day and age. For example, the time of the days of ‘Ayyam-i-Há and the festival of Naw-Rúz is set as follows: “O Pen of the Most High! Say: O people of the world! We have enjoined upon you fasting during a brief period, and at its close have designated for you Naw-Rúz as a feast.
