The Bahá’í calendar, known as the Badí‘ calendar, is a solar based calendar consisting of 19 months of 19 days each, with the addition of intercalary days known as Ayyám-i-Há. The number of these intercalary days varies according to the timing of the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere in successive years. Each of the 19 months are named after certain attributes of God. There are nine holy days in the Bahá’í calendar on which work is suspended and the Bahá’ís of the United Arab Emirates celebrate and commemorate these holy days and festivals with the rest of the worldwide Bahá’í community.
The last month of the Baháʼí calendar is the month of fasting. This is preceded by the intercalary days, the Ayyám-i-Há, and immediately followed by the Bahá’í New Year (Naw-Rúz) which is astronomically fixed to coincide with the vernal equinox and mostly falls on 20th or 21st March. According to the Bahá'í calendar, a day is the period from sunset to sunset.
The month of fasting, the Ayyám-i-Há and Naw-Rúz are explicitly outlined in the Bahá'í writings as stated by Bahá'u'lláh: "O Pen of the Most High! Say: O people of the world! We have enjoined upon you fasting during a brief period, and at its close have designated for you Naw-Rúz as a feast.” The other holy days commemorate significant historical events in the history of the Bahá’í Faith and are revered by the Bahá’ís as a source of Divine Grace and a reminder of the spiritual lessons associated with those dates.
