The Báb - Herald of the Baháʼí Faith

In the middle of the nineteenth century - a most turbu-lent period of history - The Báb announced that humanity is on the threshold of a new age, and that He is the Bearer of a new message that is destined to bring about a spiritual and social transformation in the lives of humanity. In a time that His country was witnessing a widespread moral and spiritual decay, the Báb’s message infused hope and enthusiasm into all levels of society and steadily attracted thousands of believers in a very short time span. This Youth gave Himself the title of ‘The Báb’, which means the Gate in Arabic and that He was the ‘gate’ that opened to the coming of Bahá’u’lláh.

The Ministry of The Báb started in 1260 Hijra - 1844 AD - and lasted for nine years. The main purpose of His Revelation was to prepare the way for the coming of Bahá’u’lláh.
The Báb was a member of a well known family who were descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His name was Siyyìd Ali Muhammad and He was born in Shiraz, in the province of Fars on the 1st of Muharram, 1235 Hijra, 20th October, 1819 AD. He was an exceptional and gifted child and His teacher recognized this in Him from the beginning of His education, as such, His teacher sent Him home telling His uncle there was nothing he could teach Him. While other children spent their time in play and enjoyment, Siyyìd Ali would pray and meditate in se-clusion. When He grew older, He worked as a merchant and was very soon respected and admired for His strong sense of justice and piety. After He announced His message, His fame grew and the numbers of His followers in-creased, as such, the Qajar government of the time banished Him to the furthest parts of the kingdom and instigated the religious leaders to oppress and torture the Bábis in all parts of the kingdom. Finally, on the 9th of July, 1850, the Báb was executed - along with on of His youthful followers - by volleys of bullets and in public view. He was 31 years old.

The Báb founded an independent religion with His proclamation. The most important part of His Message was to proclaim the beginning of a new age for humanity, the advancement of women, the importance of education. His call for spiritual and moral reform was a medicine that was regarded as revolutionary, as it went against all social norms of the time.

The Writings of the Báb - mostly revealed in Arabic - have been translated into many languages. Below are number of His writings:

“O Lord! Thou art the Remover of every anguish and the Dispeller of every affliction. Thou art He Who banisheth every sorrow and setteth free every slave, the Redeemer of every soul. O Lord! Grant deliverance through Thy mercy, and reckon me among such servants of Thine as have gained salvation.”

“Vouchsafe unto me, O my God, the full measure of Thy love and Thy good pleasure, and through the attractions of Thy resplendent light enrapture our hearts, O Thou Who art the Supreme Evidence and the All-Glorified. Send down upon me, as a token of Thy grace, Thy vitalizing breezes, throughout the daytime and in the night season, O Lord of bounty.”

“Say: God sufficeth all things above all things, and nothing in the heavens or the earth but God sufficeth. Verily, He is in Himself the Knower, the Sustainer, the Omnipotent.”
